Whether you have dreams of catching “the big one” on an offshore charter, or are happy to drop a quiet line in the river, the Mackay and Whitsunday region is a haven for both novice and more serious anglers.
From the barramundi found in the extensive river and estuary systems, to the abundant temperate and tropical fish on the reef - there are a number of easy and accessible locations across the district to enjoy a day of fishing.
The Proserpine River is estuary fishing at its best. Large, wild barramundi can be found in the river (keep a watch out for crocodiles), while the Peter Faust Dam on Lake Proserpine is teeming with stocked barramundi and sooty grunter. BBQ and picnic facilities at the dam make it a good day trip.
